Mogilev

In the forest to the present site of Mogilev, was a robber's camp. Was under the command of ataman of Masheka - a man of extraordinary strength.  At first it was a peaceful peasant,, but when the boyar took away his beloved bride, Masheka rebelled. He began to rob on seigniorial land, to avenge the injuries caused. Killed the hero from the hands of the most beautiful, which he loved and which became boyar wife. She did not want to change the rich house on the robber's camp and killed a former lover. Simple people buried the heroes on the high Bank of the Dnieper. And to not forgot the people who poured over the grave mound high. Over time I began to call it the "Grave of Lion"(mogila l`va), and the city that there is close to Mogilev.

Brest
A rich merchant and his companions decided to go to Lithuania, to sell their products. With great difficulty moved the caravan through a dense forest, until they reached an impassable swamp. It seemed that they are destined to stay: wagon wheels bogged down in the swamp the mire, the horses didn't want to go forward. Then the merchant ordered to cut the birch trees and cover the swamp with birch flooring. It the baggage and moved on. Seeing a small river, the travelers decided to rest. Inspected the area and saw nearby a small river flows into the larger river and form her island. On this island they decided to build a temple to thank God Veles for what helped them on the way. After that, they moved on. They returned the same way – pleased with a good bargain. Near the temple made a halt and decided to stay here for long. Built a few huts. But they remembered the difficult transition to a marshy swamp, so the city decided to call Berestie (Beresta). (After Brest)


Gomel
The town was founded by a Prince named Gom – hence the name. In Soviet times popular such version: on the Sozh river often floated the raft when warned each other about dangers to sit down on a sand shoal, shouting "Go! Go! Stranded!"(Go, go, mel`)


Grodno

History of Grodno has more than 800 years. Many centuries ago in the 10th century – on the banks of the mighty Nemunas, where it empties into the Creek in Gorodnichanka, a new settlement was founded, which was called Gordini. It appeared on the crossroads of trade routes, so it quickly turned into a small but very well fortified town with a fortress. There is a theory that the words "fence", "fencing" and gave the name of the city. There is another assumption: Grodno received its name from the river Gorodnya (Gorodnichanka).








Minsk


According to one version the city name comes from the name of the founder of the city – Menesk. This was the famous hero who built on the Svisloch stone mill, where flour was used by do not from grain, but from stones. Menesk no one saw, but at night there could be heard strange cries, songs, music, and dancing. And they say that the nights Menesk went to the villages and gathered the most courageous and strong people currently in the squad. They formed the town, near the mill, which was named for the founder.
There is another version of this legend: Menes was an evil wizard, and the people hated him and his mill. They asked another wizard to get rid of Menesk and to destroy his mill, which he did. However the village, which by this time existed at the mill, left the same name – Menesk.








                                                                                        Vitebsk

Vitebsk was built at the confluence of two rivers – the Western Dvina and Vitba, from which the town got its name. According to legend, the Grand Duchess Olga riding the shore of the Western Dvina and established place of graveyards, where they collected tribute. The beauty of the landscape so impressed the Princess that she exclaimed: "Here is the city of Vitebsk!"
